Before playing a stringed instrument (we take the guitar as an example), it is necessary to polish the nails with the help of a file, and it is an essential process to fix the nails. There are many kinds of nail files, such as sponge files, nail sand strips, glass files, and so on.

However, if the process of filing nails is not correct, the aesthetics of the nails will be reduced and you may feel uncomfortable. In this article, we take the sponge file as an example to share some tips, let’s start.

How to file your nails for new guitarists?

Main tool: professional mini square sponge file

Step 1

First, use a straight file or nail sand strip, the larger the number, the finer the particles. The 100 or 180 "slightly" straight up and straight to the upper right (the angle can be adjusted), and then round the sharp corners of the edges and corners at both ends of the nail (only It can be repaired along the way, and cannot affect the direction of the straight line that slopes upward to the right).

Step 2

Use finer sandpaper (mini sponge file) to smooth the edges of the nails and the rough and fluffy parts of the inner and outer sides of the nails.

Step 3

Then use 600~1000 grit sandpaper and a polishing rod (there are two sides, first green and then white) to polish the edge of the nail and both the inner and outer sides.

Step 4

After grinding and polishing, the effect should be as moist as jade, and it will feel smooth and unobstructed when you scratch it with your hands and fingernails.

After sanding, wash your fingers and dry them, then apply a hand cream to moisturize the skin.

Should sanding bars or sponge files be used for grinding?

Nail art is a very delicate art, and there are corresponding tools for each step. Nail art tools can be divided into grinding, cleaning, and auxiliary tools according to different purposes. We need to understand the meaning of different grinding methods first.

The meaning of different grinding methods:

  • Sanding: Sand horizontally with the middle part of the sand bar
  • Grinding: Grinding vertically with one end of the sand bar
  • Polishing: Polish horizontally with one end of the sponge file
  • Grinding: Grind the edge with a sanding strip or sponge file

Nail sand bar or sponge file?

There are different types of sponge files and sand bars on both sides. The higher the number, the smaller the grit, and the milder the friction.

The side with the larger particles is called the rough side; another side is the fine side. When using, it is necessary to grind the nails in one direction, not back and forth.
